 ATTENTION!!!  ATTENTION!!!  ATTENTION!!!
Rep. Thurston is at it again!!!!  He's proposing that the State of Florida remove it's ban on Breed Specific Legislation, which in short would allow ANY MUNICIPALITY within the STATE OF FLORIDA to ban ANY BREED (I said ANY BREED...NOT JUST PITBULLS) they deem "aggressive".  So PLEASE, forward this to anyone and everyone you know!!!!!  The obvious breeds to be affected by this AT FIRST will be Pitbulls, Rottis, Presa's, Corso's etc....BUT ONCE THEY'RE BANNED....LOOK OUT!!!!!!!!!!!!! Just a reminder, if YOU don't help defend our rights in this FREE COUNTRY we live in, and YOU don't speak up for injustices such as this one....when an animal control officer comes knocking on YOUR door, and TAKES YOUR DOG because it meets the criteria of one of the breeds on the "banned list" (mind you it won't be judged on a case by case basis...if it meets the criteria, case closed), and YOUR DOG is dragged shaking and scared into a room..wondering the entire time what it did wrong, held down by strangers, EUTHANIZED and dumped onto a pile with the rest of the INNOCENT DOGS THAT DID NOTHING WRONG BUT BE BORN THE WRONG BREED....WHO WILL BE LEFT TO SPEAK UP FOR YOU?HuhHuhHuhHuhHuhHuhHuhHuhHuh

REALITY CHECK....GO ON www.ATTS.org ... (American Temperment Test Society) you might find it very interesting to see which breeds PASS the test and which FAIL (it's not what you would imagine).  Infact, I think most people might be surprised to know that Pitbulls and Rottis temperments beat out those of Yorkies, Chihuahuas, Great Danes, Greyhounds, Toy Poodles, Shihtzu's and Schnauzers (the list goes on and on) ...(lets hope for their sake Rep. Thurston doesn't get a hold of those facts huh!!!!)

THANK YOU IN ADVANCE FOR YOUR HELP IN THIS CRITICAL MATTER!!!

See below for contact info! REMEMBER: It takes just a few minutes out of your life to compose an email or make a call ...but it takes a lifetime to overturn a bill like this once it is passed (ask the poor folks in Miami who have been dealing with a ban on pitbulls since 1989).  LETS STOP THIS BILL BEFORE IT PASSES!

Florida: HB 543 would remove statewide prohibition on BSL
Posted on December 31, 2009 by stopbslcom
Currently, Florida state law 767.14 prohibits municipalities from passing BSL.
On December 28, Florida Representative Perry Thurston filed a bill which would remove this statewide protection. If HB 543 passes, any municipality in Florida could pass BSL or breed-specific bans.
The bill has not been placed in a committee yet. The bill status and text may be viewed here: http://www.myfloridahouse.gov/Sections/Bills/billsdetail.aspx?BillId=42937&BillText=dogs&HouseChamber=H&SessionId=64
At this stage, Florida residents should contact their state representatives and let them know that this bill is not acceptable.

Contact information for Rep. Thurston, the bill author:

Rep. Thurston is a long-time proponent and supporter of BSL who has introduced similar bills in every session since 2007 (last year’s bill was HB 189, which died in committee), so this move is not unexpected. Please keep any correspondence with Rep. Thurston polite, and be aware that he’s unlikely to listen to opposing points of view. The only way to stop him is to vote him out in 2010.
Thanks to Jodi for this alert.

Bill would give local governments power to regulate specific dog breeds
Updated: 7:36 p.m. Thursday, March 4, 2010

TALLAHASSEE — The News Service of Florida

Forget about budget cuts, tax breaks and overhauling Medicaid.

The legislation drawing perhaps the most lobbying attention so far this session debuted today when state Sen. Tony Hill's proposal to give cities and counties more authority to regulate dangerous dogs came up in a committee. The measure was approved 9-2 by Senate Community Affairs, but not before a long line of dog advocates sought to curb the legislation.

Florida is among only 12 states that prohibit breed-specific regulations, and Hill's bill (SB 1276) would change that. It would allow local governments to pass breed-specific regulations.

Most of the speakers feared it would lead to specific local bans on pit bulls. And most said such sanctions would prove unnecessary and impossible to enforce.

"It's discriminating against a specific breed," said Connie Brooks of St. Petersburg, representing the Tampa Bay Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA). "It's not a bad breed. And how do we start classifying which dogs are pit bulls?"

The committee adopted an amendment by Sen. Gary Siplin, D-Orlando, that would prohibit local governments from banning specific breeds.

But the bill would still allow local governments to pass breed-specific regulations requiring such actions as registering, muzzling or neutering.

Although current law prohibits regulations by breed, Miami-Dade County and several municipalities there were allowed to retain restrictions already in place on pit bulls, and those ordinances have been upheld in appellate court decisions.

Hill's legislation is scheduled for two more committee stops in the Senate. Rep. Perry Thurston, D-Plantation, is sponsoring similar legislation (HB 543) in the House.

Controversial bill targeting pit bulls, other ‘dangerous’ dogs advances in Florida Senate
March 04, 2010|By Josh Hafenbrack, Sun Sentinel
TALLAHASSEE — Legislators found a sure way to rile up a crowd Thursday: go after pit bulls.

The Florida Senate is advancing a controversial bill that could lead to tougher municipal laws on owners of pit bulls and other "dangerous" breeds, an idea that has prompted outraged dog lovers to e-mail and call their lawmakers in droves.

The legislation, approved by senators in the Community Affairs Committee on a 9-2 vote, would repeal Florida's 1990 ban on breed-specific dog regulations, as long as any new rules stop short of an outright ban. Cities and counties could require owners to muzzle certain breeds in public, carry insurance to pay for attacks or take ownership training.

"We are discriminating against the good owners and the good dogs," fumed Laura Bevan, director the Eastern Regional Office of the Humane Society of the United States.

The passionate, hourlong debate Thursday centered on pit bulls, which are actually a type of dog that covers three breeds, the American pit bull terrier, the American Staffordshire terrier and the Staffordshire bull terrier.

As bill sponsor Sen. Tony Hill, D-Jacksonville, put it: "We're talking about pit bulls. That's the genesis of the problem we've been having."

Rep. Perry Thurston, D-Plantation, began pushing the bill in 2008 when a constituent in the Lauderdale Manors neighborhood told him she carries a baseball bat on evening strolls, citing her fear of unleashed pit bulls. At first, Thurston couldn't even get a senator to sponsor the bill in that chamber. Thursday marked the first hearing on the issue.

Examples abound of violent pit bulls in Broward and Palm Beach counties, which seem to be hot spots for attacks. In November, a pit bull and a Labrador mix ripped apart and killed a 5-week-old kitten in Oakland Park. Last May, two pill bulls attacked a woman in Fort Lauderdale's Victoria Park neighborhood and killed her dog, a silky terrier. And in June, a pit bull attacked and bit a 6-year-old girl riding a pink bike in front of her home. In several cases, police have shot charging pit bulls.

Miami-Dade is the only county in the state to have a ban on pit bulls. The county imposed that rule in 1989; it was grandfathered in before Florida adopted the ban on breed regulations.

While counties and cities wouldn't be able to copy Miami-Dade's ban, supporters said they should have the option to create local dog rules to keep their communities safe.

"There's a fundamental difference in the types of breeds and the way they behave," said Sen. Thad Altman, R-Melbourne. "I don't think we should outlaw specific breeds, but it doesn't make any sense to force our local governments to treat Chihuahuas the same as a pit bull."

Dozens of dog lovers at Thursday's committee hearing strongly disagreed. They said the owners, not the breed, are to blame in attacks. And given the reproductive mixing among dog breeds, they noted it would be difficult in many cases to determine what qualifies as a pit bull.

The bill has sparked Internet outrage, too. The call-to-arms on Twitter: "Stop BSL" — or breed-specific legislation.

Sen. John Thrasher, R-Jacksonville, one of two "no" votes on the pit bull bill, said he's gotten "more calls on this issue than any other issue this session." Every caller was a dog owner raising objections, he noted.

Ernie Sims, one of a dozen or so to speak at the hearing, said he's had a gentle pit bull, Roxy, for seven years.

"It's all about being a good pet owner," said, Sims, of Tallahassee, adding that his three-
legged Jack Russell terrier, Snoopy, is the bigger troublemaker.

Other pet owners repeated a similar mantra. As Melissa Salashia put it: "There can be a beagle that bites. A dog is not born to bite."

But supporters noted that there's a big difference between getting bitten by a beagle and a brawny, 85-pound pit bull.

Sen. Ronda Storms, R-Valrico, used her mom's fluffy Maltese, Sugar, as an example. "If Sugar bit my hand, it was a bummer, but I could just go wash my hand," she said. "A pit bull will bite into its victims and not let go."

The pit bull bill has a way to go before it could become law during the 60-day session, which started Tuesday and ends April 30. It still has two more committee stops in the Senate before a potential floor vote. In the House, the bill hasn't yet had a hearing.

Yet the 9-2 vote, Thurston said, "was a good sign. As we hear more and more instances of people and their pets being attacked, I think it goes without saying we need to give local communities an opportunity to act."

Dear friends and advocates, as many of you may know by now the situation has hit "DEF CON 1." Meaning, SB1276 is in full swing and could very much be a reality in the coming weeks. We are assembling an emergency meeting of all Board Members and guests. We need confirmation by no later than Friday at 4:00PM. Please RSVP to this email. We are strategically planning a "plan of attack" and need everyone on board for this meeting. We will be trying to connect via conference call for those that live out of the state to be a part of the meeting. If you are interested in this conference call please let us know so we can plan accordingly.

Florida Senate to Okay Dog Breed Ban
A Senate Committee passed a bill Thursday to allow discriminatory breed bans on dogs.
Reporter: Candace Riley
Email Address: candace.riley@ wctv.tv

A Florida Senate committee passed a bill yesterday (3/4) that has dog owners contacting their local senators.

The previous law prohibited municipalities from regulating breed specific dogs known to be aggressive.

The proposed change would reverse that law and allow communities to ban specific dog breeds.

Many dog lovers oppose this bill because they say the focus needs to be on educating dog owners, not banning the breed.

Sonya White, Executive Director of LCHS says,

"The way to solve the problems that the legislature' s trying to address is really by addressing responsible pet ownership, making sure that there's safety involved when people have larger breed dogs or even small to medium size breed dogs. Awareness and education is the key for safety for humans and animals."

This is not the first time this bill has been proposed to the Senate, but it has now gone a lot further than ever before.

Good morning everyone, here is the dial-in number and code. Everyone pays their own long distance and there is no other charges. Call this number and put in this code. We need to be very patient considering that we have a lot of people attending the meeting , both physically and over the phone. We highly recommend for everyone to have a pen and paper handy.

Conference Dial-in Number: (712) 451-6000     Participant Access Code: 837773#

Please note that you can call in at anytime during this conference call. In the event that your call drops, simply recall and enter the same access code. Due to the volume of people attending physically and over the phone we expect to start the meeting between 5:30 and 5:40 taking into account that some people may have trouble finding our location or getting to a phone on time. This way it gives everyone ample time to situate themselves appropriately.

If you know of anyone that needs to be a apart of this conference call please don't hesitate to give them this information.
